Change is in the air at Wilkes University! After years of dedicated service, President Greg Cant has announced his retirement, set for August 2026. This news, shared by Bill Miller, Chair of the Wilkes University Board of Trustees, marks a significant transition for the institution.
David Ward, the current senior vice president and provost, will step up immediately to the role of chief operating officer and provost. This move is designed to ensure a smooth handover during this period of leadership change.
President Cant's journey with Wilkes University began in 2020, making him the seventh president. He brought with him over 30 years of experience in education and administration, both in the U.S. and internationally.
"His tenure began at an exceptionally challenging moment for higher education," Miller stated. Under Cant's guidance, Wilkes University successfully navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. He maintained academic continuity and safely reopened the campus for everyone.
But here's where it gets interesting: President Cant will now focus on strengthening Wilkes’ philanthropic initiatives. He will expand fundraising efforts to reinforce the university’s financial stability and strategic goals. This strategic shift aims to secure the university's long-term success.
President Cant will remain in his role until August 2026, working closely with the Board as they begin a national search for the next president. This ensures a thoughtful and organized transition. The university will provide more details about the search process in the coming months.
"In the meantime, we express our sincere appreciation to President Cant for his service to Wilkes University," Miller concluded.
