The Ultimate Retirement Plan: Stephen Thompson's Dream Scenario
In a recent interview, Stephen Thompson, the veteran MMA fighter, revealed his ideal plan to retire from the sport. With a career spanning over a decade, Thompson, who turns 43 soon, is eyeing a grand finale to his UFC journey.
Thompson, with a record of 17-9-1 in MMA and 12-9-1 in the UFC, has been on a rough patch lately, losing his last three fights, including a controversial decision against Gabriel Bonfim. Despite this, he remains determined and fit, with no fights scheduled yet.
"I have one fight left on my contract, and I'm determined to see it through," Thompson said. "The White House card is a highly sought-after event, and it would be the perfect time to hang up the gloves and have one last great fight. Finishing my UFC contract in such a way would be a dream come true."
But here's where it gets interesting: when asked about potential opponents, Thompson's name was thrown into the ring with Colby Covington. Thompson was all for it, calling Covington a "great opponent" and noting their shared political leanings, suggesting Covington would also be keen on the White House card.
"It would be an honor to face Covington," Thompson added. "We both share a love for Trump, so I know he'd be just as eager for this fight as I am."
However, Thompson clarified that while the UFC is his ultimate goal, he's open to continuing his combat sports career elsewhere if the UFC decides to part ways with him.
"I still feel I have what it takes to compete, but it's ultimately up to the UFC," he said. "If they don't want me, I understand. I could still work as an analyst for the UFC or explore other combat sports. If they allow me to continue, I'll keep fighting."
