Bold headline: Federer returns to Rod Laver Arena for a landmark 2026 Australian Open opening night.
In a moment that will thrill longtime fans, the Swiss legend makes a highly anticipated comeback to Melbourne Park’s Rod Laver Arena—the first time since his 2022 retirement—as the Australian Open unveils its inaugural opening ceremony.
The event, scheduled for the evening preceding the tournament’s January 18 start, will feature a tribute to Federer, who has claimed the Norman Brookes Challenge Trophy a record six times among his total of 20 major titles.
Federer is set to take part in a star-studded exhibition alongside four-time Australian Open champion Andre Agassi and fellow Australian icons Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt.
Reflecting on his relationship with the tournament, Federer said, “It feels like a lifetime ago that I first called the Australian Open the ‘Happy Slam,’ and that name still brings a smile to my face when I recall the memories there.” He continued,
“I’ve felt a spectrum of emotions on Rod Laver Arena—from the pure joy of lifting the Norman Brookes Trophy six times, to the privilege of competing in front of Rod Laver himself. I’ve thrived on the fierce rivalries, and I’ve always been moved by the unwavering love and encouragement from Australian fans.
“Winning the Australian Open in 2017 remains among my most cherished Grand Slam memories, and defending the title in 2018 was another dream fulfilled in Melbourne.”
Federer’s legacy at the Open also includes titles in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2010. The 2026 opening ceremony will mark a historic return for Federer and a momentous start to the tournament in Melbourne.
