Beware of Oxford Congestion Charge Scams: A Warning for Drivers
A recent alert from a motorist highlights a growing concern among drivers: scam phone texts claiming to be related to Oxford's congestion charge scheme. This scheme, introduced in November, imposes a £5 fee for drivers passing through one of six points in the city center. Despite being exempt due to her blue badge status, Barbara Vardag received a text asking her to tap a link to make a payment.
Vardag's suspicions were confirmed when she called the council for verification, realizing the message was fake. She warns that such scams could lead to financial loss for unsuspecting individuals who provide their details. Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council's cabinet member for transport, advises using only the official payment system and emphasizes that the council will never call or text residents for payments, communicating exclusively by letter.
This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and the need for official verification when dealing with financial matters. As the congestion charge scheme continues, drivers must remain cautious to avoid falling victim to fraudulent activities.
