Imagine living with a condition so rare that it affects only one in 500,000 women, and yet, it can be life-altering. This is the reality for Natalie Rekowski, a mother of two, who has battled idiopathic laryngotracheal stenosis. A condition that narrows the voice box and windpipe, leaving her breathless during simple tasks.
But here's where it gets controversial: Natalie's journey to diagnosis and treatment was not straightforward. Initially, her symptoms were mistaken for asthma, and she was prescribed multiple inhalers, which did little to alleviate her suffering.
"It was a scary time," Natalie recalls. "You know something is wrong, but the tests keep coming back clear. You're left in the dark, wondering what's happening to your body."
And this is the part most people miss: Natalie's condition is not just physical; it's also an emotional battle. She felt isolated and alone, especially during her pregnancy, when her breathing became even more challenging.
However, a glimmer of hope emerged when Natalie connected with a support group and was introduced to Professor Reza Nouraei, a specialist at the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham. Prof. Nouraei's expertise and innovative techniques changed Natalie's life.
"He's a hero," Natalie says with gratitude. "Meeting other women with the same condition through Prof. Nouraei's care has been life-changing. We support each other through a WhatsApp group, and it's incredible to finally feel understood."
Prof. Nouraei's technique, developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, involves awake endoscopies and external steroid injections, avoiding the risks of general anesthesia.
"By performing laser surgery through the mouth to remove diseased tissue and then managing scarring with steroids, we can treat these conditions more often and effectively," Prof. Nouraei explains.
This innovative approach not only benefits patients like Natalie but also helps manage the increased demand for such specialized treatment.
So, while Natalie's condition is rare, her story highlights the importance of specialized care and the impact it can have on patients' lives.
