NBL Star Advocates for Middle Ground on Pride Round After Breakers Jersey Boycott
National Basketball League star Marcus Lee has urged a balanced approach to Pride rounds, warning against alienating people from important conversations about LGBTQIA+ rights. This comes in the wake of the New Zealand Breakers' decision to boycott wearing the Pride flag on their uniforms.
The NBL is celebrating its fourth Pride Round, adorning all courts with the Pride flag and inviting players to wear jerseys featuring the same logo. However, the Breakers have chosen not to participate, citing religious and cultural concerns raised by some players.
In a statement, the club expressed continued support for the event, but acknowledged the players' decision to opt-out. The team collectively decided to either all wear the insignia or none would, to protect individual players from being targeted for their beliefs.
Lee, a close friend of openly gay player Isaac Humphries, emphasizes the importance of open dialogue and the middle ground. He highlights the progress made in recent years, where conversations about Pride rounds are now possible and optional, rather than mandatory.
In 2022, Humphries became the first openly gay male to play in the NBL and the second in any top-tier basketball league worldwide. Lee, an ally, has volunteered to be included in promotional content for Pride Round, advocating for a non-confrontational approach.
Lee believes that forcing players to wear the rainbow flag would undermine the round's purpose. Instead, he supports a gradual shift, where players can choose to participate and contribute to a more inclusive environment.
The Cairns Taipans made a similar decision in 2023, choosing not to wear the rainbow logo for Pride Round, but expressing support for the event. In 2024, they announced an official partnership with Pride in Sport, hosting training sessions for players and staff during the Pride Round.
Lee suggests that the NBL's approach provides a valuable lesson for other leagues: it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing situation. He encourages a step-by-step process, starting with one team or league, to create a more inclusive environment.
Humphries, unavailable for interview, shared similar views, emphasizing the importance of visibility and acceptance. He believes that Pride Round is about creating a safe space for everyone, including those in the stands and at home, to feel included and accepted.
