India's Strategic Petroleum Reserve is set to receive a significant boost, with the potential to increase its capacity by nearly 70%, reaching 30 million barrels. This expansion is primarily due to an agreement with the UAE's Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), which will provide additional crude oil storage. The current reserve, totaling 5.3 million tonnes, is already leased by ADNOC at Mangalore, India, holding nearly 6 million barrels. The proposed increase will add over four million tonnes, enhancing India's strategic reserves significantly. This development is particularly timely, given the ongoing disruptions in energy supplies due to the West Asia war. The UAE, a top crude supplier to India, has also signed agreements for LNG and LPG storage in India, further strengthening energy security. The UAE's decision to exit OPEC and increase production without quotas is seen as a strategic move to monetize its reserves. Additionally, ADNOC's agreement with Indian Oil Corporation to expand LPG supply and trading opportunities is expected to support long-term LPG sale and purchase agreements. This multi-faceted approach to energy security, including crude, LNG, and LPG storage, positions India to better manage its energy needs and supply disruptions, especially in the face of geopolitical tensions.
