A new chapter unfolds at Gameday Bay, and it's a game-changer for the community.
The eyesore is no more! After over a year of delays, work has resumed at the Gameday Bay water park, bringing a fresh look and a promise of an exciting future. The once-dormant project, a visible reminder of financial struggles, is now a symbol of hope and progress.
A Spring 2027 Opening - Anne Graffice, the Hall of Fame Village's public affairs leader, confirms the water park's grand opening is set for spring 2027. This announcement was made at the State of the Convention and Visitors' Bureau event, hosted by Visit Canton, an organization passionate about local tourism.
Allyson Bussey's Enthusiasm - Allyson Bussey, Visit Canton's president and CEO, couldn't hide her excitement. She spoke of the resumed construction with enthusiasm, seeing it as a key part of the agency's local tourism initiatives. Bussey also revealed that a hotel adjacent to Gameday Bay is expected to start construction this year, adding to the Village's appeal.
The Hotel Mystery - While the hotel's details are still being finalized, Graffice assures us that more information will be shared soon. The hotel is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2027, a few months after the water park's debut.
A New Narrative - Bussey challenges the community to shift its perspective. Despite the delays, the Village has already attracted nearly 2 million visitors last year. It's time to recognize and celebrate the impact the Village has on the community, she says.
Gameday Bay's Promise - Gameday Bay is set to be a top-tier attraction, boasting the largest swim-up bar in the country. With nearly 90,000 square feet of wet space and over 140,000 square feet overall, it caters to all ages, from toddlers to adults. Bussey believes it will be a game-changer, a source of pride for the community.
Financial Turnaround - The Hall of Fame Village, which began in 2015, is now under the management of a private company. This change, along with a new $70 million loan and preliminary capital lease agreements, has provided the financial boost needed to restart development. The general contractor, Welty, is back on-site, working with Neuman Pools to bring the water park to life.
Overcoming Challenges - Construction on the water park had faced significant challenges, with work stalling by early 2024. Financial reports showed a bleak picture, with the Hall of Fame Resort carrying a deficit of $315.7 million as of September 2025. However, the Village's privatization and restructuring of leases and real estate agreements have paved the way for a fresh start.
A Positive Sign - Mayor William V. Sherer II sees the return of trade workers as a positive indicator. The city has invested in the Village, loaning funds for hotel renovations and infrastructure improvements. Sherer believes the Village's success could mean a return on these investments for the city.
Financing Tools - The Stark County Port Authority has approved preliminary agreements as a financing tool for the water park and hotel construction. As a tax-exempt government entity, the port authority will take ownership of the hotel property and lease it back to the Village, passing on sales tax savings on construction materials.
A New Beginning - Michael Naso, the port authority secretary, sees these agreements as a fresh start, ensuring everyone understands the funding structure and expectations. With these financial arrangements in place, the Village is poised to deliver on its promises.
The Community's Role - As the Village moves forward, it needs the community's support and trust. Graffice acknowledges this, pledging to work hard to earn back the community's faith. The water park's opening in 2027 is a significant milestone, and the community's involvement and positive narrative can play a crucial role in its success.
