Get ready, hockey fans! The Winnipeg Jets and the Montreal Canadiens are set to battle it out under the open sky in the 2026 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic! This exciting announcement promises a thrilling experience for fans of both teams.
The NHL confirmed on Saturday that the two teams will clash at Winnipeg's Princess Auto Stadium on October 25, 2026. This will be the eighth Heritage Classic in the league's history and the first since 2023.
Winnipeg is no stranger to outdoor games. They previously hosted the Edmonton Oilers in an alumni game at the NHL Heritage Classic back in October 2016 at the home of the CFL's Blue Bombers, with a crowd of 33,240 in attendance. The Jets' overall record in regular-season outdoor games is 1-1-0. They also triumphed over the Calgary Flames in overtime at the 2019 Heritage Classic in Regina.
Montreal, on the other hand, will be making their fifth outdoor appearance, but their first in nine years. Their record in these outdoor contests is 2-2-0. They previously defeated Edmonton in the 2003 Heritage Classic and lost to the Flames in Calgary in 2011. The Canadiens also participated in the Winter Classic on New Year's Day 2016, where they beat the Boston Bruins in Foxborough, Mass. They also lost to the Senators in Ottawa at the NHL100 Classic in 2017.
Steve Mayer, the NHL's president of content and events, shared his enthusiasm, stating, "When Winnipeg hosted the Heritage Classic in 2016, we were blown away by the amazing fan response and how great the venue was. Given the success the Jets have had since we were last there, it's fitting to bring another outdoor spectacle to Winnipeg."
But here's where it gets interesting... The Heritage Classic games offer a unique atmosphere, blending the excitement of hockey with the nostalgia of the sport's roots. It's a chance to see the game played in a different light, literally!
And this is the part most people miss... The success of these outdoor games often hinges on the weather. Imagine the challenges of playing hockey in potentially freezing temperatures or under heavy snowfall!
